2021 Jeju Architectural Culture Grand Prize, Grand Prize

Myeongwol-ri is a unique village with a significant meaning among the villages in Jeju. It is an historic place where 400 to 500-year-old hackberry trees exist from the entrance of the village, and where Confucian scholars enjoyed the wind and breeze at Myeongwol-seongji. Janwol is designed as a special space to continue the culture of Confucian scholars, respecting the unique environment of Myeongwol-ri.

The land was home to big trees such as hackberry trees and ficus trees that grew naturally. The form of the unstructured land and the environment surrounded by Jeju stone walls naturally took shape and the natural sequence of entering this place from the entrance of the village, along with the harmony between the surrounding residential areas, created the form of the building and the flow of the roof. During the construction process, the position of the trees was carefully measured to preserve them, and although there were some interventions in the roof and eaves, the building changed to prioritize the preservation of the trees. The large trees on the land are the most important design direction of the Janwol project.

At the center of the entire land is a veranda overlooking the field and the forest, designed as a nod to traditional Korean architecture. The open space, designed as a veranda, allows you to feel the beauty of the countryside while communicating with the surrounding villages. On one side of the veranda, there is a plan for an outdoor space where you can feel the scenery, wind, and trees under a wide roof. Two simple bedrooms are designed with low sightlines and dark colors to create a calm space and to allow you to focus on the sounds of the large trees through the windows.

The special feature that can be enjoyed together in the quiet countryside is the spa space located at the innermost part of the building. In the sauna, finished with a relaxing bathtub and a carbonated wooden ceiling, you can see a small garden with delicate effects that can only be experienced in the spa. The garden is surrounded by walls for perfect privacy and is completed as a small but perfect special feature with the towering sound of the hackberry tree.
