무스탄

무스탄(Mursten)은 ‘벽돌’을 뜻하는 스웨덴어에서 출발했다. 양평의 남한강을 향해 열리고, 뒤편으로는 자작나무 숲이 감싸는 이 장소에서 우리는 벽돌이 가진 온기와 질감을 통해 이 집의 성격을 규정하고자 했다. 한 장 한 장 쌓아 올린 벽돌담은 강과 숲 사이에 고요한 경계를 만들고, 머무는 이의 시선을 낮추며 이곳의 자연 속으로 천천히 스며들게 하는 장치가 되었다.

건축의 출발점은 실내가 아니라 ‘벽돌담’이었다. 벽돌의 리듬과 색감은 계절과 빛에 따라 다르게 반응하며, 무스탄 전체를 하나의 흐름으로 묶어낸다. 담은 외부에서 내부로 이어지는 경험의 축을 형성하고, 사용자로 하여금 강가의 바람과 자작나무의 그림자를 자연스럽게 받아들이도록 한다. 우리는 이 담이 구조적 요소를 넘어 장소의 감정을 만들어내는 매개가 되기를 바랐다.

집은 자연에 맞춰 낮게 놓였으며, 각 층과 공간은 벽돌의 선을 따라 느슨하게 연결된다. 라운지에서 스파, 침실로 이어지는 동선은 어느 지점에서도 풍경을 놓치지 않도록 구성되었고, 내부에 머무는 동안에도 남한강의 수면과 숲의 움직임이 끊임없이 시야에 머문다. 이 집은 기능보다 흐름을 우선하며, 사용자의 머무는 방식에 따라 조용한 시간의 켜가 자연스럽게 쌓이는 공간이 된다.

멀리서 바라보면 무스탄은 풍경 속에 가만히 놓인 작은 벽돌집에 불과하다. 그러나 시간이 흐를수록 벽돌담은 주변의 색을 닮아가며 자연에 녹아들 것이다. 밭의 머들이 세월 속에서 조용히 자리를 지키듯, 무스탄 역시 강과 숲 사이에서 고요한 존재감을 유지하며, 이곳을 찾는 이들에게 일정한 속도로 되돌아오는 쉼을 선사하는 집이 될 것이다.

Mursten takes its name from the Swedish word for “brick.” Set between the gentle flow of the Namhangang River and a grove of tall birch trees, the project begins with the warmth and texture of brick to define the character of the house. The brick walls, laid one by one, form a calm boundary between the river and the forest, lowering the gaze and easing the pace of those who enter, allowing them to settle naturally into the landscape.

The architectural starting point was not the interior but the brick wall itself. Its rhythm and shifting tones respond subtly to the seasons and the light, binding the entire house into a single, continuous flow. The wall becomes an experiential axis that guides visitors from outside to inside, gently introducing the river breeze and the shadows of the birch trees. More than a structural element, it was intended to serve as a medium that conveys the emotional atmosphere of the place.

The house sits low against the land, with each level and space loosely connected along the line of the brickwork. The movement from lounge to spa to bedroom is arranged so that no moment loses sight of the surrounding scenery, and even indoors, the surface of the river and the forest’s quiet motion remain constantly present. Rather than emphasizing function, Mursten prioritizes flow—allowing layers of time and calmness to naturally accumulate as one stays.

From a distance, Mursten appears simply as a small brick house resting quietly within the landscape. Yet over time, the brick walls will begin to resemble their surroundings, gradually merging with the colors of the earth and trees. Just as old stone mounds remain quietly in the fields for generations, Mursten will stand between the river and the forest as a modest presence—offering a slow, steady sense of rest to all who come here.
