한옥에세이 가회
2020년, 서촌에서 처음 문을 연 한옥에세이 브랜드가 어느덧 세 번째 공간을 맞이하게 되었다. 이번에는 북촌한옥마을, 서울 하늘이 가장 잘 내려다보이는 곳에 ‘한옥에세이 가회’라는 이름으로 새로운 공간을 열었다. 서촌에서의 고민에 이어, 북촌에서는 조금 다른 방향의 시도를 담아보고자 하였다.
한옥에세이 가회는 서촌의 문인들과 서민들이 살았던 작은 필지의 한옥들과는 달리, 비교적 큰 규모의 한옥이다. 처음부터 더 많은 사람들이 함께 모여 시간을 보낼 수 있는 공간으로 계획되었으며, ‘기쁘고 즐거운 모임’을 뜻하는 ‘가회(嘉會)’라는 이름과 그 의미를 함께 담았다.
오랜 세월 동안 일반 주택으로 사용되며 여러 차례 고쳐지고 덧대어진 구조 속에서, 본래 한옥이 가진 재료와 구조를 다시 드러내고자 하였다. 동시에 새로운 ‘한옥에세이 가회’가 되기 위한 다양한 프로그램들을 공간 곳곳에 채워 넣었다.
외부 공간은 서울의 모습을 한눈에 내려다볼 수 있는 마당을 중심으로, 다양한 수종과 물이 흐르는 정원이 어우러진 화로 공간을 구성하였다. 실내에는 높은 층고를 가진 라운지와, 도란도란 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 다이닝 공간을 마련하였다.
각 객실은 한지와 흙미장을 활용해 서로 다른 분위기로 구성하였다. 한지로 마감된 방은 한옥 지붕 너머로 하늘을 바라볼 수 있는 누마루와 연결되어 다도를 즐길 수 있도록 하였고, 흙미장으로 마감된 방은 창 너머의 후정을 바라보며 고요한 휴식을 취할 수 있도록 하였다.
한옥에세이 가회는 서울을 찾은 외국인들에게 이 도시가 품고 있는 시간과 이야기를 전하고자 한다. 사람들이 함께 모이는 ‘가회(嘉會)’의 의미, 서울을 바라보는 ‘풍경’, 그리고 함께 휴식하는 ‘동휴(同休)’의 경험을 통해, 한옥에세이가 이야기하는 따뜻한 환대의 시간을 전하고자 한다.
Since opening its first space in Seochon in 2020, the Hanok Essay brand has now welcomed its third location. This time, it has opened in Bukchon Hanok Village, at a spot where the Seoul skyline unfolds most beautifully. Carrying forward the reflections shaped in Seochon, this new attempt takes a slightly different direction in Bukchon, under the name Hanok Essay Gahoe.
Unlike the small-plot hanoks once home to writers and commoners in Seochon, Hanok Essay Gahoe is situated in a larger hanok on a more spacious plot. From the start, it was envisioned as a place where more people could gather and spend time together—an idea reflected in the name Gahoe (嘉會), meaning “a joyful and pleasant gathering.”
Over the years, the building had been used as a residence, undergoing numerous repairs and additions. In this process of renewal, the aim was to reveal the original structure and materials of the hanok, while carefully infusing the space with new programs unique to Hanok Essay Gahoe.
The exterior features a courtyard overlooking layered views of Seoul, and a garden filled with diverse plantings and a water feature, surrounding a hearth at its center. Inside, a high-ceilinged lounge welcomes guests, alongside a dining space designed for warm conversation.
Each guest room presents a different atmosphere through the use of traditional materials like hanji (Korean paper) and earth plaster. The room finished with hanji connects to a numaru—a raised wooden floor—where guests can enjoy tea while gazing at the sky beyond the hanok roof. The room with earth plaster walls opens to a tranquil inner courtyard, inviting moments of restful contemplation.
Hanok Essay Gahoe offers foreign visitors to Seoul a space where they can experience the layers of time and stories embedded in the city. Through the meaning of Gahoe, a place for gathering; the scenery that embraces the city; and Donghyu (同休), the shared rest it offers—Hanok Essay Gahoe invites all who visit to experience the warm hospitality that lies at the heart of the Hanok Essay philosophy.
