아름집
우리는 어떤 공간에서 향수를 느끼고, 무엇에서 아늑함을 느낄까? 이 프로젝트는 '집'이라는 공간에 대한 근본적인 탐구에서 시작되었다. 우리의 기억 깊숙이 자리 잡은 집의 요소를 찾아내고, 이를 새로운 공간에 녹여내는 것이 목표였다. 클라이언트는 제주에서 며칠간 온전히 머물며 휴식을 취할 수 있는, 작은 아지트 같은 집을 원했다. 그 공간은 고요함 속에서 물소리가 들리고, 클라이언트가 좋아하는 소소한 것들과 작은 즐거움으로 가득한 공간이길 바랐다.
아름집은 두 가지 의미를 가지고 있다. 우리말 '아름답다'에서 나를 뜻하는 아름과 함께 쓰여 나를 돌아보고 나와의 시간을 갖는 집이라는 뜻을 담았으며, 동시에 건물을 둘러싼 벽돌 벽으로 감싼 정원이 두 팔을 벌려 안아주는 형상을 이루어 '아름집'이라는 이름이 지어졌다. 각 실에서는 공간의 쓰임새에 따라 다양한 높이에서 정원을 감상할 수 있도록 계획되었으며, 서로 다른 방향에서 마주하는 정원이 도시에서 잊고 지낸 자연과 계절의 교감을 선사한다.
도시에서는 높은 밀도의 답답함을 해소하기 위해 높은 층고와 개방감을 중요하게 여기지만, 이곳에서는 낮은 처마가 오히려 공간을 더욱 집중되게 만든다. 낮은 처마 아래에서 집은 정원을 품고, 해가 강할 때는 그늘을 드리우며, 비가 올 때는 처마를 타고 떨어지는 빗줄기를 감상할 수 있다. 경사진 지붕은 실내에 여유 있는 천장고를 확보하는 동시에, 처마를 통해 시선을 자연스럽게 정원으로 이끈다. 하루의 시간과 날씨의 변화는 처마와 천장 너머로 스며들며 공간에 깊이를 더한다.
단면과 평면에서 고려한 공간감 위에, 우리 기억 속 집의 요소들을 곳곳에 배치했다. 건축적으로 은유된 굴뚝, 한옥의 학각을 모티브로 한 선홈통, 철거된 돌집에서 나온 고재로 만든 툇마루, 현무암 벽난로, 그리고 오랜 시간 이 땅을 지켜온 귤나무와 빌레까지. 이러한 요소들은 공간의 개성을 풍부하게 만들고, 클라이언트에게 오래도록 기억될 집을 만들어준다. 도시에서의 집은 편리함과 재산적 가치에 초점이 맞춰진 공간이지만, 아름집은 그와 다른 의미를 갖는다. 이곳은 우리가 잊고 지낸 집에 대한 향수를 불러일으키고, 고향집처럼 오래도록 기억될 공간이 되기를 바란다.
Where do we feel nostalgia in a space, and what makes a place feel cozy? This project began as a fundamental exploration of the concept of “home.” The goal was to identify and reinterpret the elements of home that are deeply embedded in our memories, translating them into a new space. The client envisioned a small, secluded retreat in Jeju—a place where they could spend days in solitude, enveloped in tranquility, with the soothing sound of water, and surrounded by little joys and cherished details that bring comfort.
Areumjip carries two meanings. The first stems from the Korean word areum in areumdapda (meaning “beautiful”), signifying a home where one can reflect on oneself and enjoy time alone. At the same time, the name reflects the form of the house—its brick walls encircling the courtyard, embracing the garden like open arms. Each room is designed to offer a unique perspective of the garden, allowing the changing seasons and nature’s presence to become an integral part of daily life—something often forgotten in the city.
In urban environments, spacious ceilings and open layouts are often prioritized to counteract the sense of density and congestion. However, in this house, the low eaves serve to enhance the focus of the space. Under the eaves, the house embraces the garden; in bright sunlight, the eaves cast deep, cooling shadows, while in the rain, they guide the falling droplets into a gentle cascade. The sloped roof creates a generous ceiling height inside, while also shaping the exterior view—directing the gaze naturally toward the garden. The subtle shifts in light and shadow throughout the day and the changing weather breathe life into the space.
Beyond the sectional and spatial considerations, elements deeply ingrained in our collective memory of home are carefully woven throughout the house. Architecturally metaphorical details such as a chimney, hanok-inspired scupper, a raised wooden toetmaru made from reclaimed wood of a demolished stone house, a basalt fireplace, and the presence of long-standing citrus trees and bille (natural stone formations unique to Jeju) enrich the space. These details not only add character but also ensure that this home remains a lasting and memorable sanctuary for the client. While urban homes often emphasize convenience and financial value, Areumjip stands apart. It is a house that revives our nostalgic connection to home—a place meant to be remembered, much like a cherished childhood home.
